Hello. I am Huib Ernste and I am a full professor of Geography at Radboud University in Nijmegen.
I study the relationship between human activities and the spatial context and the role spatial differentiation plays in society. His more specific fields of interest include:
- Philosophy and Social Theory in the field of Human Geography
- Phenomenological Approaches in Human Geography (Philosophical Anthropology, Affective and Emotional aspects of Places, Placemaking)
- Relational Approaches in Human Geography (Actor-Network Theory, Assemblage Theory, Practice Theory, Complexity Theory)
- Action Theory, Theory of Communicative Action, Recognition Theory, Participation Theory.
- Research Methodology, both Quantitative (Statistics) as well as Qualitative
I am a critical geographer, focussing his research on topical societal problems and how we can create a better, more inclusive and sustainable future, in fields such as mobility, migration, urban development, governance, sustainable action, cultural identity, encounters and exchange, violent conflicts, politics, borders, the role of art and other forms of expression in public space.
Education
I did my MSc. in Geography at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. After my master’s graduation, I did my PhD in Natural Sciences Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ).
I served as a Guest Professor in Human Geography at the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands; the University of Salzburg, Austria; the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), USA; and the University of Münster, Germany.
I teach at Ba., Ma. and PhD. level.
I have more than 35 years of experience in teaching research methods, both quantitative statistical methods as well as qualitative methods.
In my teaching, I also focus strongly on Social Theories in the field of Human Geography.
I have taught more than 45 different courses.
